General description of the collection: The Spero Dardaris papers consists of Dardaris' memoir of his service days from enlistment and training; 3 1/2 years as a POW in Japan to his discharge; and describes POW life in Camp O'Donnell, San Fernando, Bilibid Prison, Cabanatuan, Camp Inran, Hosokura POW Camp, and on the prison ship Haro Maru. Dardaris worked on labor details building an airfield in the Philippines and in a lead mine in Japan. He describes serving with an African-American soldier and treatment of him, participating in the Bataan Death March, and witnessing U.S. bombings of Japanese places. There is an historical monograph from the Cavalry School (February 1946) about the Philippine people, and a 1994 reprinting of another monograph about Troop C, 26th Cavalry, Philippine Scouts, in Northern Luzon from December 22, 1941 to 1944. Anecdotes about people in the POW camps and on the prison ship; magazine article from National Geographic on Japanese occupied Chinese airfield at Takao, Formosa; and Japanese propaganda pamphlet dropped on Chinese troops in Korea.

Spero Dardaris was a United States (U.S.) Army soldier who served in World War II (WWII). He was born in Syracuse, New York, on 28 December 1919, the son of Albanian immigrants. Dardaris enlisted in the U.S. Army in March 1941 and was sent to Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, to the Signal Corps School. After completing training in November 1941, he was sent to Manila, Philippines.
